The Presidio Golf Course opened for public play in 1996 as a part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act. Originally (in 1895), the private Presidio Golf Club operated the golf course for the military for the 100+ years that the Sixth Army Division was based here on the Presidio Military Reservation. Today the public Presidio Golf Course manages the day to day operations of the golf course and its café while the private Presidio Golf Club still thrives and features golf and social memberships that rival any within the San Francisco area.

Such is the case with the TPC Harding Park, formerly known as the Harding Park Golf Club, but now referred to as simply Harding Park. Opened on July 18, 1925 and named after President Warren G. Harding, an avid golfer who died two years earlier in San Francisco, the course runs along the shore of Lake Merced in the SW. corner of the city. It was designed by Willie Watson and Sam Whiting, also known for designing the Olympic Club Lake Course. Harding Park has been restored to past glory and has held several PGA Tour events including the 2005 WGC-American Express Championship, 2009 President’s Cup and the Champion’s Tour season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in 2010 & 2011. Harding Park is a public course and is a must play when you are visiting the San Francisco area.

The urban course, located not far from the Sunnydale public housing projects in Visitacion Valley, made the list of GolfWorld magazine's top nine-hole courses in the country. San Francisco's municipal green ranked No. 17 on the list of 25. Built in 1962 by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and designed by Jack Fleming, Gleneagles is known as a challenging course with narrow fairways and lots of trees. Gleneagles is open to the general public.

Near the center of Pacifica is Sharp Park, a municipal golf course dating from 1932 that was designed by Alister Mackenzie (1870-1934), who was arguably the greatest golf course architect in the history of the game. This 6,300 yard, par-72, 18-hole course has minimal hills. The fairways are lined with trees, and sand traps and waterways make it a difficult course for beginners. For those who like a challenge, the 13th hole is 525 yards long, and includes a shot over water. A well-maintained, attractive course, its proximity to the ocean usually means cool breezes and seasonal fog.
